Sparrows Point High student attends national medical conference

John Fisher

As a Grade 10 student at Sparrows Point High School, John Fisher already knows what he wants to do in life. And, this summer, he took the first step toward making it happen. In the interview below, Fisher talks about attending the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists conference and learning more about his future career while there.

What are your career goals?

Fisher: “I’m interested in working as a veterinarian for small animals.”

How did you discover your interest in veterinary medicine?

Fisher: “Both my parents have worked in hospitals, and I’ve enjoyed hearing about how they’ve helped people. Being a vet would allow me to help both people and animals, which is my main interest.”

What is the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists?

Fisher: “It’s a three-day conference where students who qualify can listen to some of the top medical leaders in the country. It’s also a chance to meet some of the speakers.”

How did you find out about the conference?

Fisher: “I received a letter in the mail saying I was nominated. Once I replied, I started receiving more information.”

What did you do during the conference?

Fisher: “I listened to the speakers talk about the ways they began and what they had to do to get where they are. It was also a great chance to meet new people.”

What did you learn from the conference?

Fisher: “I learned a lot about the progress we’ve made in medicine and about what I can do now to achieve my career goals.”

What else did you do this summer?

Fisher: “I attended a science camp and volunteered at a vet center.”

What are your hopes for this school year?

Fisher: “I want to get on the honor roll all four quarters and do well on my tests.”

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Fisher: “This was an amazing experience, and I plan on returning next year!”

This year, students from Catonsville, Dulaney, Eastern Technical, Franklin, Pikesville, Sparrows Point, Towson, and Woodlawn high schools attended the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists conference. For more information about the conference, click here.
