West Towson Elementary was named one of six Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools for 2016-2017.

When West Towson Elementary School was named a Maryland Blue Ribbon School last week, it became the 24th BCPS school to earn that prestigious status.

We thought this would be a great time to explain what Blue Ribbon status means and look at the BCPS schools that have earned this achievement.

Q: So what is The Blue Ribbon School program?

A: The Blue Ribbon School program is a state and national program that recognizes and honors high performance and significant process. Schools must meet rigorous standards developed by MSDE and the U.S. Department of Education.

Q: How was West Towson Elementary selected?

A: This year, West Towson and the other honored schools were all selected in the category of exemplary high-achieving school. Each scored in the top 15 of all Maryland Schools on the 2017 PARCC assessments. An average of 79 percent of West Towson Elementary students met or exceeded expectations in math and Engligh language arts.

Q: How many Maryland public schools earned this status?

A: Just six. They are:

  • West Towson Elementary School, Baltimore County
  • Urbana Elementary School, Frederick County
  • Fallston Middle School, Harford County
  • Waterloo Elementary School, Howard County
  • Bannockburn Elementary School, Montgomery County
  • Luxmanor Elementary School, Montgomery County

Q: So what happens next?

A: As a Maryland Blue Ribbon School, West Towson will receive a Maryland Blue Ribbon flag, a monetary prize, $1,000 in office supplies, interactive technology equipment, and a school celebration. At a dinner in Annapolis on March 12, 2018, the winning schools will be celebrated by the Maryland House of Delegates and the Senate.

Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools compete for National Blue Ribbon Awards, which will be announced by USDE next year.
